Today I was a chaperone for a vibrant, fun, diverse, 1st Grade class from Alimacani Elementary in Jacksonville, Florida. The field trip destination, the Jacksonville Zoo & Gardens.
Ah....... 1st Graders: filled with light, energy, questions, wonder, opinions, more questions and always always a step ahead or (many steps ahead) or a few steps behind.
We had three girls in our group, Tia, Chloe and Savanna. Chloe had been to the zoo with her family many times, 5 or 6, she was a wonderful tour guide. Her sense of direction and recollection for the location of all the animal exhibits was was right on point.
The only rule we had, FOLLOW THE LADY WITH THE PINK SHIRT. I was invited by Crystal Moyer, she was the lady in the pink shirt.
It was definitely school day at the Jacksonville zoo. Alimacani had three buses there, there were children and chaperone's from several area schools. It was just the right amount of children.
The children all got there around 10am, they had three hours to explore, run, and enjoy the zoo, including lunch. Tia's class had about 18 kids, I think 6 parents and or friends or guardians helped out with her class, along with Ms Kostage, the teacher.
Lets see if I can remember all the animals we saw: pink flamingos, ostrich birds, giraffes, rhinos, leopards, cheetahs, lions, snakes, frogs, butterflies, bears, penguins, stingrays, zebras, the animal called PUMBA in the Lion King, (I can't remember what they are called), monkeys, alligators, turtles, foxes, and a few more that I'm not really sure what they were. They have quiet a representation of the animal kingdom in the Jacksonville Zoo.
The zoo is bordered on one side by the Saint Johns River and you can actually get to the zoo by water taxi from the downtown area of Jacksonville. It is north of the city about 20 minutes from where I live. I would definitely go again !
