On Seeing the Stars..... by Charles Rafferty
ON SEEING THE STARS REFLECTED IN THE POND BEHIND MY APARTMENT COMPLEX
Even a pond replete with auto parts
repeats the evening better than my art.
================================================
I ran across this poem when I was working on my MFA @ Queens University.
There are many aspects I like about it. In the collection titled, Where the glories of April Lead, this poem jumps out because the page is 80% blank, the poem being 2 lines.
I like the subject matter: reflection, stars, juxtaposition, the act of recognizing beauty via an ordinary setting, the potential of moments, the consequence of imagination, man's disregard for nature, using a pond as a dumping ground for auto parts, and the poet's recognition that nothing can compete with the poetry visible in the skies.
Enjoy !
