Madam You're Invited......

Madam You're Invited......

Twice during this visit I've been startled by the children. Saturday during the excursion to the Aburi Gardens, after 57 of them had been served lunch, they were all waiting patiently for the "Blessing" to be lead by Renee. Once we were done praying and the children opened their eyes, in unison, like if they had practiced for some time, they all said politely.....Madam you're invited......and they all gestured towards their bowls. It was a beautiful moment that still amazes me when I think about it.

The same happened on Tuesday. I helped Teacher Lowerenda serve all the lunches. The children waited for all to be served, then there was the food blessing and then in unison they all looked my way and said Madam you're invited......

Both times I thanked them and told them to go ahead and eat. And speaking of eating, for the record the children today eat without utensils. It is the way the eat at home and we can't change that. At the same time we are going to introduce utensils once a week. When they go to Ayikumah we plan to have utensils be the norm. It is very Ghanian to eat with your fingers, Kenke and Fufu is not meant to be eaten with utensils, we certainly don't want to disregard their culture and tradition, at the same time we don't want fork or a knife or a spoon to be a foreign object to the children

We will see how this all moves forward.
