Today we arrived in Cusco, 55 minute flight from Lima. We were delayed in the airport in Lima for about 2 hours, the city was fogged in. We were not in Cusco long, as we made our way to the Sacred Valley, we are half way between Cusco and Machu Picchu, tomorrow when we take the Vistadome train, we will be 90 minutes from Machu Pichu.
Cusco is colonial, old, has charcater that visible in the people, the streets, the clothes, the smiles on peoples faces, I am so excited to go back and spend 3 days there. So far no one in our group has had any issues with altitude sickness, Cusco is at 11,000 feet. When I got off the plane, I immediately felt the need to breathe deeper, and maybe more breaths than normal, but once I stood still for a bit waiting for luggage all is well.
We are at Casa Andina Private Collection hotel, nestled at the foot of majestic mountains in the Sacred Valley. The hotel is like a lodge, lots of beautiful flowers, walkways, and the mountains serve as the backdrop almost anywhere you look.
Last night in Lima we went to Huaca Pucllana restaurant and had a wonderful, memorable dinner. We toasted the evening with Pisco Sours and sat in a patio setting, the evening was cool, but not cold, the food and service very very nice. The location overlooked a newly discovered archelogical dig, a huge pyramid like structure right in the middle of the city. We had beef hearts (anticuchos), ginea pigs chicarones, great corvina, pasta and beef. All wonderful presentation with lovely service and Argentinian wine.
I have to go take a nap, I will write more later. We are all glad we are here, all looking forward t visiting Aguas Calientes tomorrow and Machu Picchu.
